چکیده
Accepted 17 July 1996 A 36-year-old man was admitted to this unit with almost complete quadriplegia with no sensory level. The bladder and bowel functions had remained intact. When he was a 20-year-old student he had presented with brachialgia and neck swelling, which had been aspirated percutaneously in India in 1980; the fluid was discovered to contain protoscolecs and he was given a full course of mebendazole. Two years later he developed spinal cord compression. He had posterior exploration and cervical laminectomy in the Middle East in 1982 followed by another three surgical attempts posteriorly with further laminectomies in the Middle East in 1983, India in 1985, and USSR in 1989. Each attempt was followed by a course of mebendazole and resulted in a minimal degree of improvement for a short period of time. Plain X-ray of the cervical spine showed a swan neck deformity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed (figure).

An unusual case of high cervical spinal cord injury.
Isolated spinal cord injuries can rarely be found in patients with no traumatic radiological abnormalities of the spine. Stenoses of the medullary canal and degeneration of cervical spine are the predisposing factors. A case report of a 68-year-old patient is described, who developed quadriplegia with cardiac arrest due to isolated cervical spinal cord injury while jumping on a trampoline. Comp...
متن کاملSurgical relief for spastic tetraplegia due to cervical cord compression.
The purpose of this paper is to alert the clinician to an unusual, but entirely treatable, cause of progressive spastic tetraparesis. In the management of tetraplegia, in which treatment usually has to be supportive rather than curative, it is important to be aware of any remediable condition that calls for early surgery. Neurological localisation in the upper cervical cord is often imprecise, ...

http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1806-9282.63.01.18 Spondylodiscitis affecting the cervical spine is the most unusual type. Disease progression can be dramatic, even causing quadriplegia and death. We present an unusual case that progressed with osteolytic lesions between C2 and C3, causing cord compression and epidural abscess. The patient was treated surgically by a double approach and improved with...

We report the case of a 84-year-old man, with history of rheumatoid arthritis, admitted the Hospital for a fall and complaining of dysaesthesia and pain located to the cervical spine and arms. Within a few hours after admission, fever and acute, progressive, ascendant quadriplegia became evident. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of cervical spine showed spinal canal stenosis between C4-C6 with ...

OBJECTIVE Cervical myelopathy is a spinal cord dysfunction related to degeneration typical of aging. Its primary pathology is related to ischemia and spinal cord compression. Patients with myelopathy present many clinical problems; more severe cases may lead to quadriplegia if not treated in a timely manner. Because the primary pathology of this disease is caused by compression, thus generating...
